The Well News is looking for a economics & business / future of work reporter to join its team in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience as a journalist, with a background in covering business and state or local economies.
This role is responsible for generating story ideas and analysis for a sophisticated audience that includes industry executives, lobbying groups, policymakers and legislators. The reporter will be expected to develop sources in regulatory agencies, and connections inside and outside of state legislatures, including trade groups and lobbying associations. Excellent writing skills along with experience working with social media networks are musts.
Mastery of reporting and writing skills required to produce news stories and features with minimal editing under deadline
Proven ability to develop and cover a beat, including developing sources, developing story ideas, and conducting interviews
In-depth knowledge of state legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes
Meet deadlines and file clean, concise, and comprehensive copy on complex issues with a high degree of accuracy, balance and relatability
Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and must be curious and able to generate feature ideas
Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data for trend stories
Collaborate to develop story ideas, schedule them and deliver them on time while keeping in close touch about developments on news beat
Digest large amounts of information, “see the story,” and execute with urgency as needed
Must demonstrate an ability to mine legislation and regulatory filings for incisive stories
Considers alternative means of telling stories, including graphics and video when appropriate
Develops and consistently maintain high-level sources in the government and private sector
Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned
Engage with The Well News readers through various social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook, and bring new ideas to the table for growing Facebook fans and Twitter followers
Writing vivid, original articles, ranging in length from 300 words to more than 1,500 words, for publication; clean copy is mandatory
Participate in story planning meetings
Education & Experience Requirements:
2-5 years’ experience in journalism with background reporting on the economy, business, or future of work; prior experience covering broadband, connectivity, 5G, or infrastructure broadly is desirable
B.A. in journalism or related field; or equivalent work experience in beat reporting
Mastery of journalism principles and techniques
Expertise using AP style
Experience covering regulatory agencies, state houses, and/or policy issues
The ability to write clearly and concisely for a sophisticated, executive-level audience
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple assignments and tight deadlines
Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
High level of initiative required and the ability to work independently
Willingness to contribute and coordinate as needed as a member of a small team
Candidates most likely to excel in this position will be ones who are self-starters, motivated by excellence, competitive, curious, and also enjoy being part of a small team
Ability to capture photos of interview subjects or relevant imagery to file with stories
Ability to work remotely as needed from your Washington, DC home-based office while keeping your colleagues informed of your assignments and developments
Three to five published writing samples, including briefs and feature articles no longer than 1,000 words; include hyperlinks if available
Telecommuting is allowed.
