The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California seeks one or more highly qualified adjunct instructor(s) to teach sections of ASCJ 200: Navigating Media and News in the Digital Age.
As an instructor, you will be responsible for teaching at least one section of the lab requirement. You will provide students with the foundational skills needed to perform extensive research on a chosen topic, and to create multimedia assignments that make a sound critical argument related to their topic. Using the Adobe Creative Cloud, students will learn to create infographics, shoot and edit video, record and edit podcasts, and manipulate images. Students will also create individual WordPress sites where they will post all assignments (written and digital) and maintain a Twitter feed. Â Duties and Responsibilities:
Deliver workshops over a 15-week period on multimedia production as outlined in the syllabus to meet course objectives. Each weekly lab section meets for 80 minutes.
Administer and grade assignments based on student learning outcomes and assignment rubrics.
Be available to hold weekly office hours and respond to student inquiries in a timely manner.
Be fully engaged in the course, which may include attending lecture sessions and team meetings.
Â Essential Qualifications:
B.A or B.S. degree in journalism, communication, design, cinema/tv or a related field.
Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud; ability to teach workshops and troubleshoot in the following programs: Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, Premiere Pro. Certification in at least one program would be highly desirable.
Ability to explain technical concepts to students in a patient and friendly manner.
Understanding of design fundamentals.
Ability to assess student writing and projects based on critical thinking, analysis, and argumentation.
Strong organizational, motivational, and communication skills.
Ability to teach and explain theoretical concepts.
Be receptive to critical feedback from the lead faculty.
Ability to use (or learn) the universityâs learning management system, Blackboard.
Own (or have access to) a laptop computer that is capable of running the latest version of the Adobe Creative Cloud. You will be provided with the software.
Â Preferred Qualifications:
Masterâs degree in journalism, communication, design, cinema/tv or a related field.
Previous teaching or training experience.
5+ years of industry experience in multimedia production, design, journalism or a related field.
Applicants should have a primary career elsewhere.
