KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. We are an independent, nonprofit news organization producing award-winning journalism, podcasts, and events in service to the 3.9 million people in our coverage area. As a self-sustaining service of the University of Washington, our mission is to create and serve a more informed public.
KUOW has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary (one-year), paid News Fellowship. The opportunity is also open to recent graduates and aspiring journalists with non-traditional but relevant experience. The fellowship is designed to develop journalistic skills. We will guide you on identifying and crafting news stories for broadcast and digital platforms, covering breaking news, creating feature stories, recording interviews, and reporting on a beat.

BASIC FUNCTION
Reporting to the Editor, the News Fellow collects and analyzes information and produces news reports for broadcast and web.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Identify and craft reported audio and digital stories. • Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and drive time shows. • Appear on KUOW talk shows and at live events to present and discuss reporting. • Active engagement with social media and source networks as a reporting and distribution tool. • Meet daily filing schedule that requires occasional evening and weekend work. • Work closely with assigned Editor on special editorial projects, aligned with newsroom priorities and designed to build skills and experience. • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Required
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute
Preferred
• Background in news writing, radio production, and audio editing software. • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and check facts. • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to professionally represent the station. • Familiarity with and appreciation for public radio style programming.
