The Bay Area News Group, which includes The Mercury News and East Bay Times, has an opening for a breaking news editor. We’re looking for an energetic and aggressive journalist who combines strong news judgment and quick, digitally-focused decision-making skills with the kind of teaching/coaching approach to editing that turns promising reporters into great ones.
You’ll work with reporters and editors on the breaking news team and across the newsroom — as well as visual journalists and our audience engagement team —to handle the biggest breaking news stories of the day. We'll also look to you to launch deeper enterprise off the news, and guide the team toward interesting stories that aren't staring us in the face. Convince us you are a phenom at making things happen -- and someone who is always looking for answers, rather than explaining why things can’t be done.
A qualified candidate will have:
Five years experience as a working journalist, with at least two years as an editor
Reporting and editing clips that demonstrate sharp news skills and meaningful journalistic impact
The ability to juggle multiple stories on varying timelines
Proficiency with analytics and audience engagement tools
A passion for identifying, training, coaching and elevating talented journalists
