C&EN (Chemical & Engineering News) produces authoritative, award-winning journalism from around the world of chemistry, including research, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. It is published by but editorially independent of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society dedicated to a single discipline. C&EN is widely considered one of the major benefits of ACS membership. Its weekly magazine reaches more than 150,000 members of ACS, and its website receives more than 13 million page views per year.
We are seeking an editor who will coordinate coverage of news about chemistry research and the people involved in it.
What you’ll do
Coordinate selection and editing of C&EN’s science news content in our digital products and in print. Work with writers, both staff and freelance, to develop stories. Lead daily stand-up news meetings.
Scan media headlines, press releases, and journal offerings to identify stories that are can’t-miss for C&EN’s readership. Also attend scientific meetings to find sources and stories.
Work with colleagues in other teams to promote science news content via social media, newsletters, and C&EN’s homepage.
Work with C&EN's creative staff to create images and videos that engage and inform audiences.
Support the executive editors of C&EN’s science groups by mentoring early career reporters and providing feedback for reporter performance evaluations.
Write occasional features and news stories about the molecular world, for an audience of chemists and chemistry enthusiasts.
What you’ll bring
A college degree in chemistry or a related scientific field is required.
At least 7 years of experience in science journalism, including at least 3 years of experience in an editing role. Proven skill in assigning, editing, and creating digital news, features, and multimedia.
Experience conceptualizing, developing, and shaping engaging and accurate content, including digital stories and multimedia, that resonate with a sophisticated scientific audience.
Proven ability to manage staff and freelance writers.
Strong editorial judgment, journalistic values and ethics, and oral communication skills.
The ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, high-stakes environment with limited supervision.
Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices.

This position will be primarily based in the D.C. office unless otherwise agreed upon. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement.
